Summary
"Dorothy "Dot" Griffin Coe was born in Valdosta, Georgia, and lived there during her early childhood. Her father's hobby was raising Chinchillas, competitive show rabbits, and a small number of albino Angora rabbits used for children's pet. Dot grew up with a special feeling for animals. She acquired a pet gopher, a pet billy goat, and even had a pet squirrel, but she never had such a "mudane" pet as a dog. During the great depression in the late 1930's, her father's mercantile business failed and unforunate circumstances forced her family to move to Orlando, Florida to live with her mother's family. When her father found steady employment several months later in Tallahassee, Florida, the family relocated again. Dot went to Leon High School where she met and married her sweetheart, Ridgway Coe., Ridgway loved to hunt so Dot rode the sandy forest roads in the truck with him while he tracked and hunted game. They began raising birds dog pointers and then deer hounds. Twice, throughout the years, they penned and housed thirty plus deer hounds. Finally, when she became a senior citizen, she decided to hunt rather than just ride and at age 64, she shot and killed her first white-tailed buck as it was being trailed by the Coe hounds. At the age of 85, Dot continues to enjou the deer hounds, the forest animals,a nd the time she spends in the Apalachicola National Forest. The beauty and wonders of the forest have instilled in her a desire for others to look upon the forest lands as she does. She offers, as her heart's desire and her first publication for your reading enjoyment, Experiences of a Naturalist in the Apalach-icola Nationa Forest"--Page 4 of cover
